FOOD OR FUEL CAMPAIGN 2023 / 2024

To eat or to heat, that is the question…

How would you choose if you had a choice between the two? Think about that for a moment.

With the largest cost of living jump in 30 years, this winter some may have to make the difficult decision between choosing to keep food on the table or heat their homes.

The number of people seeking help because they cannot afford both food and energy has risen more than threefold in a year, according to new data that highlights the increasingly tough choices households face between heating and eating.

We are seeing more families facing the impossible choice between topping up the gas meter or putting food on the table, which means volunteers and communities are stepping in to help those who are struggling like never before. Basic foodstuffs and domestic energy are inescapable purchases and with the cost of these two commodities rising astronomically, it’s becoming a reality that some families will need to choose one or the other. We’re not just talking about those in lower socio-economic groups either, we’re seeing people from all walks of life being affected by these challenging increases.

HOW WE CAN SUPPORT

This Winter, we have teamed up with Coop Channel Islands, Island Energy Group and the JEC to launch our “Food or Fuel” campaign, which provides vouchers to the value of £50 to our Islands most vulnerable families.

This will make an enormous difference at a time when these families will be under the most financial pressure.
